Abstract
In this work, a process producing carbon black instead of carbon dioxide, by reacting methane with carbon dioxide and burning the product gases, is investigated. The process, patented by Szego and Biardi in 1994, has the advantage of combusting methane without releasing carbon dioxide but carbon black, which is easier to store than the CO2. The process was modeled by means of mole and energy balances, equilibrium stages and with the ideal gas assumption. This process model was investigated concerning process conditions and eciencies. The results show a comparable eciency (over 43%) to today's gas cycles with CO2 capturing, operating the system at a temperature above 1000 K and pressures above 100 bar. Show more
