  1. Tree planting: How new state strategies of forest governance, community ownership, and consultation lead to uneven outcomes for communities and places

    Sharma, Kavita (2024)
With a forest cover of 18%, Scotland is one of the least forested countries in Europe. The loss of forest cover in Scotland took place throughout the Middle Ages up until the 19th century, due to iron works, demand for charcoal and tanbark, and industrialization. After the timber shortage of the first world war, the UK government established the Forestry Commission in 1919 with powers to acquire land throughout Britain for securing Timber ...

  2. UBFuzz: Finding Bugs in Sanitizer Implementations

    Li S.; Su Z. (2024)
International Conference on Architectural Support for Programming Languages and Operating Systems - ASPLOS
In this paper, we propose a testing framework for validating sanitizer implementations in compilers. Our core components are (1) a program generator specifically designed for producing programs containing undefined behavior (UB), and (2) a novel test oracle for sanitizer testing. The program generator employs Shadow Statement Insertion, a general and effective approach for introducing UB into a valid seed program. The generated UB programs ...

  3. Global trends and scenarios for terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystem services from 1900 to 2050

    Pereira H.M.; Martins I.S.; Rosa I.M.D.; et al. (2024)
    Science
Based on an extensive model intercomparison, we assessed trends in biodiversity and ecosystem services from historical reconstructions and future scenarios of land-use and climate change. During the 20th century, biodiversity declined globally by 2 to 11%, as estimated by a range of indicators. Provisioning ecosystem services increased several fold, and regulating services decreased moderately. Going forward, policies toward sustainability ...

  4. Detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in a Zoo-Kept Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)

    Chan T.; Ginders J.; Kuhlmeier E.; et al. (2024)
    Viruses
Many different animal species are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2, including a few Canidae (domestic dog and raccoon dog). So far, only experimental evidence is available concerning SARS-CoV-2 infections in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). This is the first report of SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection in a sample from a red fox. The RT-qPCR-positive fox was zoo-kept together with another fox and two bears in the Swiss Canton of Zurich. Combined material from ...

  5. Nonlinear model reduction to temporally aperiodic spectral submanifolds

    Haller G.; S. Kaundinya R. (2024)
    Chaos
We extend the theory of spectral submanifolds (SSMs) to general non-autonomous dynamical systems that are either weakly forced or slowly varying. Examples of such systems arise in structural dynamics, fluid-structure interactions, and control problems. The time-dependent SSMs we construct under these assumptions are normally hyperbolic and hence will persist for larger forcing and faster time dependence that are beyond the reach of our ...
