  1. Passive confinement of reinforced concrete members revisited

Morger, Fabian; Kenel, Albin; Kaufmann, Walter (2024)
    Structural Concrete
Passive confinement provided by transverse reinforcement is taken into account in the design of reinforced concrete structures subjected to high compressive loading such as columns, piers, or tunnel lining segments. In current guidelines, several models exist to account for this beneficial effect. However, these approaches lack mechanical consistency regarding the three-dimensional load dispersion of the confining forces. The article ...

  2. Multiresolution kernel matrix algebra

    Harbrecht, H.; Multerer, M.; Schenk, O.; et al. (2024)
    Numerische Mathematik
We propose a sparse algebra for samplet compressed kernel matrices to enable efficient scattered data analysis. We show that the compression of kernel matrices by means of samplets produces optimally sparse matrices in a certain S-format. The compression can be performed in cost and memory that scale essentially linearly with the number of data points for kernels of finite differentiability. The same holds true for the addition and ...

  3. Anthropogenic Eutrophication Drives Major Food Web Changes in Mwanza Gulf, Lake Victoria

King, Leighton; Wienhues, Giulia; Misra, Pavani; et al. (2024)
    Ecosystems
Discerning ecosystem change and food web dynamics underlying anthropogenic eutrophication and the introduction of non-native species is necessary for ensuring the long-term sustainability of fisheries and lake biodiversity. Previous studies of eutrophication in Lake Victoria, eastern Africa, have focused on the loss of endemic fish biodiversity over the past several decades, but changes in the plankton communities over this same time ...
